May 2020
Welcome to another “quarantine” edition of the Nissen newsletter! As other states slowly begin to open up, Washington is on shut-down for at least the rest of May. We continue much the same as last month. Greg and Isaac work. Debbie and the girls do homeschool. We zoom for church group meetings. Other than work, we are mostly at home.
Much of society may be shut down right, but the work of the Lord never shuts down. We simply modify what we’re doing and look for unique ways to continue sharing Jesus and encouraging one another. Sharing and praying with people is so vitally important right now. People are anxious and afraid. From many stories we’ve heard shared through church, people are open right now. They are open to prayer and to hearing about the Gospel. The world is very likely watching Christians during this time, so we must take care what it is that we share!
Greg mostly does Uber Eats and DoorDash right now for our needed extra income. These are delivery services (primarily food) rather than transporting passengers. While Greg doesn’t get as many passengers these days with Uber, he does still get a small number of them. Recently, he picked up a passenger from a cancer center. He opened up on the trip and told Greg about his condition, the chemo treatments he’s just started, and his thoughts about dying. Greg shared briefly about his belief in prayer and his faith in Christ. The passenger said he believed in many religions, but Greg kept the focus on Jesus. He offered prayer, and the man was very open. Greg also recommended that he find and read the book The Case for Christ by Lee Strobel. The man was very thankful for Greg’s prayer and encouragement. Greg has had a few other opportunities similar to this one, where he got to share his faith or pray for people during this time. Even though he doesn’t have many Uber passengers right now, Greg is really getting to know a lot of restaurant workers! They recognize him now when he comes in, and they have brief chats while he’s waiting for the food orders. He’s always looking for opportunities, so who knows where this may lead?
While Debbie rarely leaves home, she stays in close touch with her middle school group via zoom and text. They meet on Monday afternoons as well as the regular Wednesday night youth meetings. During the Monday meetings, they usually play a game, share testimonies or Scripture verses, pray for each other, and just chat about how things are going. A few times a month, she has zoom meetings with some of the ladies from church. It’s such an amazing time just to share with each other. That’s one thing we really appreciate during this time is how the body of Christ is working to encourage and strengthen each other and how so many are reaching out to their communities. It’s such a rich blessing to see the Church arising and moving during such a difficult time in the world.
As we come closer to the summer months while still in quarantine, we’d like to encourage you to continue giving. We and other missionaries still need monthly financial support, and summer months are often low. We understand that for many, being out of work during quarantine may put a financial stress on you. As you exercise your faith for God’s provision, so will we. If you’re at all able, we encourage you to give in faith. We receive financial support, but we also give it; so we understand the need and the sacrifice of giving. Whether you donate one time or on a regular basis, or whether you simply take the time to pray for us, you are part of what we’re doing for God’s kingdom in the Seattle area. We pray God richly blesses you all, and we pray that you all will see God’s wonderful provision in the months to come.
