Dear Family and Friends, January/February 2020
Happy New Year! Here’s to 2020 and seeing the Lord exalted in the nations of this earth! Let Your kingdom come and Your will be done we pray Father! May you see the goodness of God in your life this coming year! (This will be the only newsletter for both January and February.)
Yarick’s Testimony: Yarick is a 20-year-old young man who has been part of our church for the past several years. He grew up most of his life in the orphanage because his parents passed away from drug addiction when he was still quite young. Yarick himself also had a very serious drug problem (mainly with meth) for most of the time we’ve know him. This past fall he was doing so poorly that we thought we might lose him. Our pastor went away for a month-long ministry trip in November and was concerned it would be the last time he saw Yarick alive. We found one more drug rehab that would take him in, about 40 miles from our city. After being there just three days we got a phone call that he had left. We happened to be having a prayer meeting at that time and began to pray for him. On the next day there was a youth gathering at church and much to my surprise, Yarick was there! He came up to me and proudly proclaimed “I repented!” I thought it was wonderful, but at the same time I had some reservations, as I’ve heard those words before! Yarick looked at me with big eyes and said “You don’t understand, this is different!” He told me the story: As he walked back to Krivoy Rog that cold November night, he began to pray to God for the first time and he simply asked if God could help him. He told God he didn’t know if there was any hope left for his life, but if God could do something with him, to please do it. Within minutes a bus pulled up and gave him a free ride back to Krivoy Rog; and in that moment, Yarick knew that God truly cared about him. That morning he’d been awake about an hour before he realized an amazing thing, he had not been outside to smoke a single cigarette, which was one of the first things he did every morning. Then he realized he had no desire for meth and no desire for alcohol – he was completely delivered and set free overnight! It was a miracle! Yarick is a changed man! Ever since that day he’s been involved with us in as much ministry as possible. Yarick is also visiting the homes of other boys from our church who struggle with drug addiction. He takes his bible and tells them that they are going to read the Bible and pray together; and that God is going to change their lives too! We’ve been praying for God to change the lives of our young people and now we have this shining example of what our miracle-working God can do with one life! We are so excited to be part of Yarick’s journey of faith and to see what the future holds for him! Please continue to pray for Yarick as he walks out his new found faith and freedom!

Christmas: Before the holidays we had a week of five Christmas parties in a row for the dorms, kid’s hospital, and Greenfield women’s home. It was a lot of preparation work, but it was also a lot of fun! We made sure that all of the youth, kids, and ladies heard the Gospel through the Christmas story; as well as everyone received their own special gift from us to remind them how much God loves them and how much we love them too! We had the best time! Everyone was so thankful for the time we spent with them, for tasty food, and for their gifts too!
Hats, mittens, scarves, and blankets: Thank you to everyone who donated warm clothes last year! It’s always cold in those old dormitory buildings, so the students were incredibly grateful to receive blankets, as well as hats and scarves! We also delivered the warm winter gear to all the children living at a local children’s shelter. The children are there for several months up to several years, while they enter the foster care system or wait for the ability to return to their parent’s homes. It’s a place with a lot of emotional pain, and anything we can do to brighten their day is welcomed! Nice new hats, scarves and gloves were just the right thing, and I shared how so many people in America are praying for them too!
Giving and Donations: Since it’s the beginning of the year, I’ll take a moment to remind you that everything that happens in Ukraine is because of your financial support and prayers! I am able to live there and serve the beautiful Ukrainian people because you donate to me and this ministry! I truly am thankful for all of you who have given to me over the years! Together we are seeing Ukraine changed! Every donation counts! Nothing is ever too small or too big! Just a reminder, when sending checks by mail, please make them out to “FIRE International” and in the memo line write “Leann Peterson”. You can also give online through the FI website, www.fire-international.org or the new FI app on your phone. Through the website you can also set up automatic monthly giving with your credit or debit card. And if you’ve been donating with the automatic system already, now’s a good time to check and make sure the donations are still being taken out of your account, because when a card expires the automatic giving ends! It’s an easy thing to miss! Most importantly, THANK YOU for finding value in this work and choosing to be part of it! God Bless you!
After seven weeks in the States, I will return to Ukraine on February 10th! It was so great to be able to connect with so many personally while I was here! It was a good trip to Wisconsin with family and friends, but now I’m ready to head back to Ukraine!
Thank you so much for your faithful prayers, support, and encouragement! We are in this together! Ukraine for Jesus! I pray your life be full of peace and joy this year!
Blessings! Your Missionary to Ukraine,
