Greg & Debbie Nissen November 2019 - Fire International

November 2019

About one year ago, Greg made his last trip to Seattle before we moved to Washington. At the time, we had no idea when God would open the door for us to go, but Greg felt in his spirit that his trip would lead to us finding a house. We had gone to our mission conference the month before and had spoken to one of our fellow missionaries, who is from Tacoma, and also her daughter. Both mentioned connections they had that might lead us to finding a house here. Greg followed two leads, one through a real estate agent our fellow missionary knew, and the other, which involved a house owned by friends of that missionary’s daughter. Greg looked at both houses. One was a rental and looked promising, as the owner said she’d consider us even though we didn’t have an income of three times what the rent was (the normal requirement for renting here). The second house we loved, but it was for sale, not rent. We looked into options for buying, but they weren’t working out. We never dreamed how God would work everything out!

We sent in documents to aid in us renting the first house, and we waited. One day, we prayed together that if it was the house God had for us that we would hear something soon. If it wasn’t the right house, we prayed that He would close the door firmly. Less than two minutes after we prayed, we got a text. The door was closed. We were disappointed, but we kept praying and believing that God had something for us. Not long after that, we felt impressed to contact the owners of the second house to see if they’d be willing to rent to us. They had also been praying about it, since their house was not selling, and they agreed to give us a 6-month contract.

Though we have moved on from that first house (which sold after our contract was over), the way the Lord has opened door after door since we’ve moved here is something we are very, very thankful for! Sometimes, it’s easy to focus on the big picture, both in our prayers and in our thanksgiving, but the little things are so amazing when you consider them! It’s the small connections that have brought us to where we’re at. Through our missionary friend, we made contact with a church in Tacoma, which eventually connected us to the church we’re currently part of in Gig Harbor. Through our former landlord, we were able to find the house we’re now settled in. God knew every little piece of the puzzle that would fit together to get us planted in Washington. In the interim between England and Washington, we prayed constantly that God would plant us exactly where He wanted us…and in His perfect timing. He did exactly that

The picture is still coming together, piece by piece. We don’t see the larger design of what God has in store…all the reasons why He called us here. We’re only seeing the little pieces, but each one is necessary and important. We believe God has an amazing plan for the Pacific Northwest, a region in desperate need of revival. We believe we are here for more than one purpose and that more doors are going to open as time goes on. Meanwhile, we are serving in ways we never expected, but we know the Lord orchestrated every detail, and we are grateful.

With Thanksgiving right around the corner, we want to give thanks for all He has done! We’re thankful for our home. It’s everything we prayed for. We’re thankful for our church. Not only have we all made a lot of new friends, but we have been given many amazing opportunities to serve. Even more than that, we believe we are in the right place to receive further equipping for what God has ahead. We’re thankful for the beauty of our surroundings. On a clear day, there is nothing like seeing Mt. Rainier in all its majesty, a testament to the glory of God and His creation. We’re thankful for family and friends who have supported us in many ways. We are thankful for the apples a neighbor let us pick. We’ve had so many apple pies and apple crisps, and we still have several jars of apple butter to last us through the winter. The list could go on and on! We’re thankful to our Provider, our Creator, our Savior, and our Lord. If not for Him, we’d have very little to be thankful for!

October was a full month. We started out attending a conference at our church. Greg took part in a “Freedom Prayer Training” course, Debbie did “Hearing God’s Voice,” and our two oldest kids attended the “Living Set Free” course. This was Greg and Debbie’s second time attending the conference, and the kids did it for the first time. All of the courses are amazing, and they’ve had an impact on us in many ways, both in our personal walks with the Lord and also in our ministry. Isaac and Moriah loved it and want to attend the next one. We also celebrated Gabriela’s 12th birthday! One more year, and we’ll have all teenagers. Finally, we had a visit from Greg’s sister Kris. While Greg and the kids took her on a Seattle tour, Debbie went to a youth leader’s retreat.

We hope you have a very blessed holiday season. And, remember, don’t forget the little things in life!
