“Learn the language, learn the culture. Learn the culture,
learn the language.
You cannot separate the two.”
Our tutor’s first words of instruction still ring in our ears 8 years later. Seeing the delight (and surprise) in a Filipino’s face when their native words comes out of my mouth is relationally inspiring.
English is everywhere in the cities (1 of 2 national languages), but it’s been a deterrent. My 4+ years of traditional language lessons have been helpful but not enough.
As this FIRE School PH semester ends (see above photo), the Lord has led me (with our missions director’s approval) to devote a concentrated amount of time to a new language learning method that expects me to speak Visayan more fluently in six months.
The nations of Asia are always burning on my heart. More than 2,300 languages are spoken in this continent. As I teach World Missions, as I meet with FI Asia missionaries, as I inspire the Filipino church to help reach the nations, I cannot do so without stressing the importance of language acquisition. All the more reason why this is a very crucial season for me and the work here.
Please believe with me for breakthrough sa akong hunahuna ug gracia ni Ginoo (in my mind and for the grace of God). And if you want to learn a foreign language, I highly recommend the Growing Participator Approach!
