We are Timothy and Sharie Martiny, missionaries in Guatemala with our six children, Julia (16), Audrey (13), Vanessa (11) Jessica (9), Alex (6) and Alison (4).We both come from missionary families and were raised overseas, Timothy in Europe, and Sharie in South East Asia and Mexico.
The story of how we came to be missionaries in Guatemala is unique, to say the least. In 2002 we came on a short term trip, we had two daughters at the time, aged 3 years and 5 months. We had planned to stay for 3 months, but after spending some time here we felt called to fulltime service so we decided to stay.
We had little money, spoke almost no Spanish and had no support, but we stuck it out and 11 years and four more kids later, we are still here.
For the first several years we worked with youth groups doing street evangelism, assisting with outreaches, doing food distribution and distributing humanitarian aid.
In 2005 we started working with a small orphanage in zone-7 of Guatemala City, teaching English and Bible classes, and that was the beginning of our Skills for Life programs which have grown to several orphanages and schools and which provide computer, English, carpentry and cooking classes to hundreds of children.
As Christians, it is our faith in God which drives us to do dedicate our time and energy to teach train and equip these children to live a better life. As such teaching them to have faith in God, to find their morality from the Bible, and seek to live a holy life. To this end we teach Bible studies to our students and teach them to memorize scripture.
Raising 6 children in a less developed country has been quite a challenge. God has definitely used it grow our faith as we have had to depend on Him to supply our needs.
Since coming to Guatemala in 2002 we have worked in a variety of ministries including food distribution, humanitarian aid, youth group counseling, mass evangelism and personal counseling. The main focus of our mission work for the last several years is teaching educational and vocational training programs to orphaned and disadvantaged children in orphanages and schools as well as teaching them the Bible, memorizing scripture and helping them come to know God.
We currently work at the orphanage Fudnanions where we have a computer lab and carpentry workshop for the children to learn vocational skills; we teach English classes to the children every week and most importantly teach them the Bible.
We also teach at Centro Educativo Precisos Momentos, a school for poor children and street kids who live in a poor part of Guatemala City. We setup a computer lab for the students and teach regular English and Bible classes at the school. We hope that by giving them English, computer and woodworking instruction, we are providing them with the skills to earn a better living. By teaching them to have faith in God and live a Godly life, they will know that peace and happiness can always be theirs.
